❓ How Does YouTube Royalty Management Work with Soundreef?

Updated over 3 weeks ago

```html
📌 Introduction
Soundreef collects royalties for uses on YouTube and distributes them to the rights holders according to a quarterly reporting schedule.
In this article, we will cover:
When and how YouTube royalties are published and paid
In which countries Soundreef collects directly from YouTube
What YouTube conflicts are and how they affect payments
How view monetization works
1️⃣ When are royalties for YouTube uses published and paid?
Reporting frequency
  • Soundreef reports quarterly the data related to YouTube uses. Example: YouTube usage data for the first quarter of the year (January-March) is published on the pay day of April 30th of the same year.
  • Royalties are paid to the rights holders at the end of the quarter 30 days after the end of the usage quarter, thus coinciding with each pay day.
What happens in case of conflicts?
  • If a track is in conflict with other Collecting Societies, the views and royalties are temporarily excluded from the reporting.
  • Once the conflict is resolved, the royalties are included in subsequent reports and paid in the first available quarter.
2️⃣ Does Soundreef collect royalties from YouTube worldwide?
Countries where Soundreef collects directly from YouTube
Soundreef collects royalties directly from YouTube for views made in the following countries:
🌍 Europe and surrounding area
Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Kosovo, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, Moldova, Montenegro, Principality of Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, United Kingdom, Romania, Russia, San Marino, Serbia, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, Hungary, and Vatican City.
Other countries: reciprocity agreements
For other countries not included in this list, Soundreef collects royalties through reciprocity agreements with local Collecting Societies. This allows for the reporting and payment of royalties for views generated in those areas of the world.
3️⃣ What are YouTube conflicts?
Definition of conflict
  • YouTube conflicts are situations where there are discrepancies between various Rights Management Societies claiming parts of a track; such as differences between documentation or non-uniform claim rules. A conflict between two or more societies occurs when the claimed shares of a work exceed 100% of the copyright (DEM and/or DRM).
What happens in case of a conflict?
  • If there is a conflict, YouTube suspends royalty payments until the dispute is resolved.
  • Once the correct attribution of rights is clarified, YouTube unlocks the payments and Soundreef includes them in the first subsequent useful report.
4️⃣ Are all YouTube views monetized?
How does monetization work?
✔ It is possible to assign different rules, called “policies”, to individual parts of a video that can be claimed, such as the visual part, the music, the text, etc.
✔ For tracks for which Soundreef claims the share of music rights ownership on behalf of its members, the “MONETIZATION” policy is always assigned.
However, if multiple parties correctly claim a part of the same video in the same territory, YouTube applies the most restrictive policy among those indicated by the various parties.
📌 Note: Here you can find a detailed explanation of the list of policies and how they work in various cases.
📌 FAQ
When will I receive my YouTube royalties?
✔ Royalties are reported and paid quarterly.
Why don't I see royalties from a YouTube video?
✔ If your track is involved in a rights conflict, YouTube may have suspended payments until the dispute is resolved.
Does Soundreef collect YouTube royalties worldwide?
✔ Soundreef collects royalties directly for views in over 40 countries and, through representation agreements with other Collecting Societies, also in other areas of the world.
📌 Conclusion
Soundreef manages the collection and reporting of YouTube royalties on a quarterly basis, both directly (in over 40 countries) and through representation agreements with other Collecting Societies internationally. In case of conflicts, royalty payments are not processed by YouTube until the conflict itself is resolved. Once the correct attribution of shares is restored, YouTube then releases the expected amounts; and Soundreef includes what is due to the rights holders in the first subsequent useful report after the resolution.
Always keep in mind the reporting timelines and ensure you correctly register your Tracks - complete with metadata, to facilitate more effective tracking.
