🎧 ISRC from A to Z: Insights and Best Practices 🎧

Updated over a week ago

πŸ“Œ Introduction
The ISRC code is a unique identifier for each audio recording, useful for tracking usage and collecting royalties, especially online.

Although it is not mandatory to register with Soundreef, it is strongly recommended.
Below we will see where to obtain it, how to enter it in your registrations, and what to do in case of error or duplication.

πŸ†— Who issues the ISRC code?

Soundreef does not issue ISRC codes.
Soundreef handles copyright management, it is not an authorized agency for assigning ISRC codes.

You can obtain the ISRC from:

Keep in mind that

πŸ” The ISRC code consists of four elements:

  1. Country Code (e.g., IT for Italy, GB for UK, US for USA)

  2. First Owner Code – 3 alphanumeric characters

  3. Year Code – the last two digits of the year of assignment (e.g., 15 = 2015, 16 = 2016)

  4. Track Code – 5 progressive digits (e.g., 00001, 00002, etc.)

The first two elements (Country and First Owner) are assigned by National Agencies or the International ISRC Agency. The other two (Year and Track Code) are assigned directly by the entity that needs to identify individual audio tracks.

πŸ‘‰ In Italy, FIMI is the only officially authorized Agency to issue ISRC codes.
If you obtain your First Owner code from FIMI, you are considered the owner of the recordings to which the codes are associated, and you can independently generate ISRCs starting from that code. If instead, you use an ISRC code provided by a third party (such as a digital distributor), that entity will be the official owner of the recordings.

πŸ” The first owner ISRC code is requested only once in a lifetime and is valid, worldwide, for all your musical recordings. Once obtained, you can independently generate ISRC codes for each audio or video recording, modifying only:

  • the Year Code (e.g., 18 for 2018, 19 for 2019, etc.)

  • the Progressive Track Code (e.g., 00001, 00002, etc.)

πŸ” Each audio recording must have a unique ISRC code.

There cannot be multiple ISRC codes for the same track, but each significant variation may require a new code (changes in duration, remixes or new editions, updates on already existing old recordings).

Each version must be uniquely identifiable internationally.

🎯 Correctly entering the ISRC in the Soundreef registration

You can add the ISRC:

  • During registration, in the section related to Versions (main and alternative) of your track.

  • Subsequently, by accessing the Versions tab of the track and integrating the data.

Each master or version (remix, instrumental, extended, etc.) must have a unique ISRC code.

❌ How to modify an incorrect ISRC code

If you have entered an incorrect code in a version:

  • Contact the Soundreef Support team via Messenger (on the website or in your account).

  • Specify exactly which version needs to be deleted, providing as many details as possible.

🎯 The more precise your report, the faster we can intervene.

⚠️ What to do if the ISRC is already in use

If the system notifies you that the ISRC is already in use:

  • It means it has already been assigned to another version.

  • In this case, it cannot be reused.

  • Contact us to verify and possibly eliminate the duplicate.

❓ FAQ

πŸ”Ή Can I use the ISRC provided by my distributor?
Yes, you can enter it in Soundreef registrations, even if you did not request it through FIMI.

πŸ”Ή Is the ISRC mandatory to register with Soundreef?
No, but it is highly recommended for online tracking and royalty collection.

πŸ”Ή Does each version of the track need a different ISRC?
Yes. Each master or version (e.g., remix, instrumental) requires a unique code.

πŸ”Ή Can I add or correct an ISRC after registration?
You can add the ISRC independently and at any time from the track's Versions tab; to update/modify it, however, you need to open a specific request to our Soundreef support.

πŸ”Ή What to do if I enter an incorrect or duplicate code?
Contact us: we can help you archive the incorrect version and fix the registration.

πŸ“Œ Conclusion

The ISRC code is a very important element for the correct identification of your recordings and digital tracking. Always enter a unique ISRC for each version of your track, and if you need to correct an error, our team is available to assist you.
