How do I register my Works in Soundreef?

You can easily register your Works in your Soundreef account, either through the Web version or the app. The process is always free.

1. Works details: title, artist name, and genre

In the "Songs" section of your Soundreef profile, start a +New Song Registration and enter a few details:

  • the Title of your work
  • the Artist name under which it is distributed and published online
  • the Genre, choosing one (the closest match) from the dropdown menu

If you are registering more than one Work, you can automatically copy the same Artist and Genre for all.

FAQ/Clarifications

  • Does your work also have one or more Alternative titles? No problem, just contact our Customer Service and let us know. We will register them for you, linking them to the original Title.

  • What does "Artist name" mean? It refers to the performer (which could be an individual artist, a band, or an artist with a featured collaborator, etc.) under whose name the Work is published and distributed online. It may not always correspond to your stage name: if you manage multiple music projects, for example, each might have its specific Artist name.

2. Rights holders

Next, specify the Performance and Mechanical rights shares percentages for each rights holder of the Work (it’s important to list them all!). Make sure the scheme reaches:

  • 100% of the Performance Rights
  • and 100% of the Mechanical Rights

If you are the sole rights holder, you can assign yourself 100% of both Performance and Mechanical Rights (and you can register your Works even if you don’t have a Publishing Agreement yet).

For each rights holder, specify their Role, depending on their creative contribution or, in the case of publishers, depending on their specific editorial function (e.g., original publisher, sub-publisher, administrator etc).

FAQ/Clarifications

  • Which Rights Holders does Soundreef search box suggest? Only registered Soundreef members in our database. If you need to add a non-registered rights holder, select the option "Didn’t find who you were looking for?" and enter their details.

  • Who decides the percentage split? Always the rights holders; it’s a private agreement in which the collecting society does not intervene. Once decided, each holder proceeds with the Work registration at their own rights management society.

  • What are Performance/Mechanical shares? These % represent the ownership of the musical performance rights (public performances, motion picture, radio and television broadcasting, online uses, and background music) and the mechanical reproduction ones (video reproduction, recording by broadcasters, phonomechanical reproduction, and on music DVDs, multimedia downloads, and streaming).

  • Can I register only my share without adding the other rights holders’ ones? Only in exceptional cases and temporarily. To ensure the collecting activities are always timely and accurate, the more complete the registration (from the start), the better. Therefore, it’s important to indicate the full chain of ownership of your Works.

  • How do I separate my Author share from my Composer one? If you wrote the lyrics and composed the music of your Work, you can identify yourself as "Author/Composer." In Soundreef, however, it’s not necessary to specify only the authorship percentage (lyrics) and only the composition percentage (music), as we don’t require a minimum/maximum authorship percentage on a Work. If you are an author/composer, you can assign yourself a share from 0 to 100% of performance rights.

3. List of Works

To activate your Work, all you need to do is digitally sign your Soundreef registration document, called the List of Works.

The List of Works only summarizes the shares managed by Soundreef and must therefore be signed only by Soundreef authors/publishers, not by rights holders registered with another society (they will register and sign with their own collecting society).

You can also preview the List of Works, which is very useful! It allows you to check any details that may need modifying/adding (if necessary), going back in the registration process. If everything is correct, go ahead with the signature and proceed to the next step.

The List of Works will be sent to all Soundreef authors/publishers indicated in the registration.

FAQ/Clarifications

  • My List of Works is cancelled, and I can’t sign it: what does that mean? If your List of Works has expired due to missing signatures (yours and/or other Soundreef rights holders), no problem: we can resend it through our Support Service. Just contact us and provide the details of the relevant Song Registration.

4. MP3/ISRC: Versions of your Work

To integrate your registration data, upload your MP3 file and add the ISRC Code, which is very useful for tracking online uses of your music.

Haven’t obtained the ISRC code yet? No problem, you can add it later. Is the audio file not ready yet? No problem either, your work is active immediately after signing the List of Works. The MP3 file is supplementary and can be added later at any time. If you have an initial but not final version of the file, you can upload that for now. Once you have the final version, you can add it as a "Version."

FAQ/Clarifications

  • What is meant by "Versions" of the work? How can I add them? These are different audio masters that can derive from an original work. If you record alternative versions of your work (extended, radio edit, remix, instrumental only, vocal only, performed by other artists, etc.), you can add them all to your Soundreef profile without limits: select the title of your work and access the "Versions" tab, where you’ll find the "Add Version" button.

  • Remember that if it has a different shares split, it’s considered a separate Work and should be registered separately; if it has the same splits and it's just an alternative master to the main one, it’s a Version of the work.

  • Is it mandatory to add the audio file and ISRC code for my work? No, but it’s highly recommended, as both are very useful for tracking uses (Radio/TV in the case of the MP3 file, and Online in the case of the ISRC code). You don’t have to add this data immediately; you can register your work, sign it, and later add the metadata.

  • Is it necessary to upload lyrics and sheet music? No, it’s not required; we manage the rights for your work in its entirety, including lyrics and music. To support your registration, only an MP3 audio file is needed.
